My Podiatry Future

My Clinic

Unlike many careers in the health sector, Podiatry requires only weekday time commitments. With no weekend or shift work required, Podiatry gives people the time to enjoy the lifestyle of their choice.

Many Podiatry Clinics are situated in picturesque locations with amazing ‘playgrounds’ on the back doorstep. Taupo for instance has endless year-round fishing and water recreational opportunities on offer with Lake Taupo and many nearby rivers. In winter the snow slopes are within an easy drive.

One of New Zealand’s leading Podiatrists, John Miller, is an enthusiastic advocate of young people taking up podiatry because it’s “an awesome job”.

As General Manager of New Zealand’s largest podiatry clinic, John is a walking billboard for the benefits of becoming a Podiatrist. Boasting ten regional clinics plus satellite clinics in the North Island, his company Foot Mechanics employs more than 30 people in podiatry.

It all began 10 years ago when John graduated with a degree in Podiatry from Wellington’s Central Institute of Technology (CIT) and set up a private practice in the sunny city of Tauranga in the Bay of Plenty region. Initially John specialised in the treatment of sports podiatry, but then broadened his patient base to pursue interests in high risk feet, and “comfort podiatry”.  “Having variety is great and it has enabled me to become highly skilful in many areas of podiatry”, says John.

An enthusiast for working together with patients to get results, John has worked with elite athletes such as New Zealand cricketers and has been the official podiatrist of the Waikato Chiefs rugby franchise and assisted a number of All Black players.

John’s business success can be attributed to his philosophy of involving patients in their treatment and making sure they understand the problems that have often translated into other health issues. Thanks to the size of the business, John can also provide staff with a range of career paths, specialties and the option of working in multiple locations.

“Podiatry is a fantastic career and one where I’ve gone from starting a new business, specialising in sports, working with elite athletes, broadening my patient base and now – I’m enjoying the challenge of the business aspect of healthcare.
